KRYPTONITE
What better name to call a product than one that epitomizes strength?
And that’s just what Memphis-based Buck Gardner Calls has captured with its new Kryptonite Acrylic Call.
“The Kryptonite is a new call that we brought out basically because everyone wanted to have a really, really loud call that would be loud enough to compete in duck calling contests,” says Buck Gardner, BGC’s president and former World Champion and Champion of Champion competitive caller.
In other words, the Krypto is loud, right?
.
“It’s loud enough to wake the dead,” Buck says with a laugh. “It’s extremely loud on top and it has a big sound. It’s not a high-pitched narrow sound. It has absolutely the best bottom line duck sound of any contest call I’ve ever heard.”
And that’s saying a lot from the man whose company is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the call business in 2007.
“There are a lot of people who like a really, really loud call that hunt big water,” Buck says. “They want a call that will really reach out there. And this call will do that. The contest calls that everybody blows today are extremely loud.”
How loud, Buck?
“This call (Krypto) is about a 120 decibel call at six feet and you really need to wear ear protection if you are in front of it,” Buck says, again with that all familiar laugh that waterfowl hunters have come to love and appreciate not only through his calls, but his videos and public appearances.
Buck is quick to point out that the Kryptonite is not part of the company’s famed Spit-Tech line.
But, he says, “It blows pretty good when it is wet.”
As for the call’s name, Buck says that goes back – you guessed it – to the adventures of Superman on TV and the movies. Or, as Buck again likes to joke, “We got this (product) from Superman’s own planet through a friend of his named Lex Luther.”
Seriously, Buck says the product’s name was suggested by one of the guys who work for BGC.
“One of the guys came up with it (the name) because we wanted something so strong that even Superman couldn’t handle it,” Buck says.
For now, the Kryptonite Acrylic Call comes only in a chartreuse green acrylic, which, we might add, is a departure from what BGC’s normally does. Depending on the calls’ success – which early returns are impressive – Buck expects it to eventually be available in addition colors.
When asked why chartreuse, Buck grinned and said, “Because that’s what kryptonite looks like.”
The call, Buck says, is “just like everything we make. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to keep it. Unlike most calls if you blow them and you don’t like them and you’ve blown them, you’re out of luck. With us, you just send it back to us and we’ll either repair it or replace it or in the worst case scenario send you your money back.”
For sure, the call works.
In fact, Jeremy Romain of BGC recently tied for first place in the Cache River Regional, using one of the new Kryptonite Acrylic Calls. Jeremy followed that performance with a first-place finish in the Central Alabama Open Duck Calling Championships at Wetumpka, Ala.
“We’re selling them so fast over the Internet ( HYPERLINK "http://www.buckgardner.com" www.buckgardner.com),” Buck says. “It’s one of the few things that I have ever made that we can hardly keep up with the production of the sales. That’s basically the same thing on the Shawn Stahl (Signature) Goose Calls we’re making.”
The Kryptonite has a retail value of $149.99 and is currently available through Mack’s Prairie Wings 2007 catalogue (1-877-622-5779) and will be stocked by select Bass Pro Shops nationwide or by contacting BGC at (901) 946-2996. By Larry Rea, Media Director
